The Erlauf-Walster-Runde is a leisurely loop through the Mariazell region. Streams, lakes, green meadows and forests invite you to linger.

The leisurely trekking tour through the Mariazell region starts at the village square in Mitterbach. After a short warm-up phase, the route climbs up the Schindelsattel after just a few kilometers and then descends rapidly into the Walstern. Coming from the Walstern - a popular destination for many guests - the tour continues to the famous pilgrimage site of Mariazell. As a final stage destination, you cycle from Mariazell along the road and then the cycle path to the crystal-clear Erlaufsee lake. A dip in the cool water can be advisable on hot summer days to make the last few kilometers back to Mitterbach.

Route description Village square Mitterbach at the B20 junction (turn-off towards St. Pölten) to Mühlgraben, via path 690, Schindelgraben to Schwarzwalstern. Continue straight through the Walstern and Rechengraben. At the junction with the federal road B21, turn right towards Mariazell and continue via Kreuzberg to Mariazell. Follow the road to St. Sebastian. In St. Sebastian, turn towards Erlauf Lake and return from Erlauf Lake back to Mitterbach.
Getting there Coming from Vienna, take the A1 to the St. Pölten Süd exit, then B20 to Mitterbach at Erlauf Lake. Coming from the west, take the A1 to the Ybbs exit, then via B25 and B28 to Mitterbach at Erlauf Lake.
Editor’s tip A plunge into the mostly cold but clear Erlauf Lake refreshes both body and mind!
